Is there a firm definition of a hit? I get a weekly report from our ISP with
an impressive total number, but when you look a little closer, a page with
several graphics scores a hit for each graphic, and if the user hits the
reload button on their browser (as they are likely to with constantly
updating sites), you score another set of hits. My pages average about 5
graphics to a page, so I take 20% of "hits" as being a more likely number of
visits to pages overall. If there are 10 pages, then the real number of
visitors may be closer to 2% of the hits. At least I know that when somebody
downloads a PDF file, it's an indication of genuine interest (and by
coincidence that's about 1-2% of total hits). There's also a clue in the
number of times a graphic is "hit" -- if it is a lot less than the "hits" on
the page it is on, then many visitors have not waited for the page to finish
loading -- you lost them at the intro.
